THREE:All thoughts of the double marriage were for the moment relinquished. The Czar of Russia had a son and a daughter. Happen what will, therefore, he is resolved to share with her all the hardships which the king, his father, may be pleased to put upon her.Some of our readers may think that the above narrative is quite incredible; that a young sovereign, who had just written the Anti-Machiavel, and who knew that the eyes of the world were upon him, could not be guilty of such perfidy. But, unhappily, there is no possible room for doubt. The documentary evidence is ample. There is no contradictory testimony.
